That there are older methods of computing Dynamic range out there-most commonly by measuring the "Crest Factor".Ĭrest Factor measurements reflect the difference between the average volume and the peak volume-so they are easily swayed by periods of silence or near-silence (which distorts the average), and by short-duration peaks-which may not represent the volume of the loudest parts of the track accurately. In technical terms, Roon's "Dynamic Range" is the same as R128's "Loudness Range". It's great to finally have a digital release of a non-destroyed mastering of Iggy's mix, but this was low effort for a 50th.Ĭlick to expand.Roon uses an other system for computing DR:Īs with Volume Leveling Roon's dynamic range calculation is done based on R128 standards. Wrong "I Got a Right" take, decades old needledrop source for "I'm Sick of You" (at least do a new transfer if no tape exists), missing the rest of the Got a Right & Sick of You EPs, inclusion of "alternate" Embassy mixes that aren't actually any different but lacking the one track which is an alternate mix, "Search and Destroy". But unfortunately they didn't fix the real issues of the disc. The "bonus disc" on the 50th download is a little different to the 2010 as they removed the Iggy remix tracks and added a Gimme Danger remix I don't care for. The 20 LP are clearly missing the major distortion introduced by Iggy's "all in the red" nonsense. The 2012 LP release of this mix is more like the 1997 EQ-wise. The 1997 CD is kind of bright, though, so I might attempt an EQ in the middle. But I immediately felt the 2023 sounded muffled. I can't tell if the 1997 CD was boosted by this much or the 2023 was reduced. In comparison to the 1997 CD, there is a slope downward starting at around 400hz and is at 6db by the time it reaches 20khz. However, the EQ for the 2023 is pretty muffled sounding. The 2023 Iggy mix mastering is obviously far superior to the 1997 CD, which is absolute garbage. It was upsampled from 96khz at best but may've been upsampled from 48khz. Also, this is not a true 192khz transfer. Very close to the 2010 but a little compression.
